Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
There’s a power in rock ‘n’ roll that few truly capture, something primal and timeless that echoes down the ages and way beyond its first nascent stirrings in the 20th Century.
This tumult arises from something deeper, going into the very heart of who we are. Artists like Janis Joplin understood this, as did Led Zeppelin amongst others, their ability to somehow tap into this natural well making them part of an elite group of musicians who continue to dominate the hearts and minds of countless thousands globally.
You can now add The Damn Truth to this glittering roll call, the young Canadian band having already assured their presence felt with two acclaimed albums and now offering this new single as a declaration to herald their third, ‘Now or Nowhere’.
Genuinely impressive, ‘This Is Who We Are Now’ excites from the very first moments onwards, a huge wave of true soul that’s powerful, overwhelming and all conquering.
The production by the legendary Bob Rock capturing the essence of what the band have without damaging the humanness at its core. Drums thunder, the bass throbs, the guitar alone could wreak havoc to the solar system and the vocals of Lee-La Baum control the storm, a commanding presence over the hurricane.
When Tom Shemer eventually lets loose on the solo you can feel the sky crack open, his compatriots in the band there at every beat, their focus unwavering.
This is a massive, positive and bold statement of intent and one that should see the Montreal quartet one giant leap further closer to carving their name in the history books.
