Torn was written by Chez and Harry Scott Ellliott and recorded at their in-house studio in South Wales. It is a real partnership from the two of them to get the single released as Chez handles all the vocal parts whilst Harry played all the instruments and did all the production, mixing and mastering.
Chez says about Torn, “The inspiration for this song came from losing touch with myself & the music industry. Music has always been the driving force of my life and it really hit home when I all of a sudden lost my way & direction. This with added personal problems all got a little too much and I pretty much hit rock bottom. I didn’t know who I was anymore.
I slowly managed to start making healthy life changes with help from my close ones and was eventually able to see things in a new light and I started writing music again. That’s when I wrote ‘Torn’. It’s emotional, it’s dark & it’s as real as it gets! I’m not perfect and that’s ok.
The song itself is a blistering slab of melodic rock with to my ear, an Amy Lee / Evanescance feel to it. It starts off with a guitar intro before Chez’s emotional and haunting vocal part kicks in. The track then builds superbly and has some really beefy guitar parts within it during the middle section.
Chez’s vocals are superb throughout and range from quiet and melancholic during the tracks quieter moments to some scintillating soaring parts that perfectly showcase what a superbly talented young lady she is.
The song, a very personal piece of music, has real heartfelt emotion throughout and you can really hear that emotion in her voice as she opens her heart up to the listener. Line’s like “A stranger to myself, locked up in my own head” and “Drowning in my tears, who am I meant to be” show perfectly the pain that Chez was going through that enabled her to write such a heart wrenching track.
It really is an excellent debut solo single from Chez Kane. The song is crafted superbly and builds really well. It has some great time changes that take you on an emotional rollercoaster with her and as much as it is catchy and will get you singing along, the lyrics really make you think and feel for her.
Next time you make a cup of tea or are just sitting on your phone/computer give the song a listen, it really is worth 5 minutes of your time.
