The Rolling Stones – Criss Cross – Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM

No outfit has been as persistently at the top of the league as the Stones and they remain the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world to this day. It’s a bold claim that many have challenged but, whilst there have been giants in the field, none have come close to the longevity and primal power.

Harnessing all their R&B grit, soul and sublime writing skills into one feral ball, the band have laid waste to stadiums all over the globe during their legendary live shows. With a songbook so jammed with absolute classics that it is the envy of everyone, even the Stones have shining gems yet to be unearthed.
The album ‘Goat’s Head Soup’ was hailed by fans and critics as a towering achievement at the time of its release at the end of August 1973, lead single ‘Angie’ being released eleven days before the album. The Stones pushed themselves harder and further than before, the album reflecting both a laser focus and a desire to widen their boundaries into other areas.
It certainly paid off but in providing such a taughtly crafted package something had to go. Fortunately the album is now on the verge of a re-release with brand new mixes and a whole treasure trove of additional optional features ranging from CD and vinyl editions through to a lavish deluxe box set.
Most exciting of all these new features is the addition of three previously unheard tracks. ‘Scarlet’, ‘All the Rage’ and ‘Criss Cross’, the latter being available to listen to on YouTube. ‘Criss Cross’ is a stunning track, full untamed rock ‘n’ roll spirit and featuring a vocal from Mick Jagger that is both lithe and sensual and utterly wild at the end as he really lets loose the pure animal passion.
It’s hard to believe, but one of the finest releases from the Stones just got better. Watch the video, listen to the song, get blown away and excited by the music once more. Nobody does it better.
