Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
They say to never screw with or try to remake a classic. Great advice and true…but sometimes you stumble upon an exception to this golden rule.
In a bold move, Midlands Legends and the godfathers of Metallica, Diamond Head have emerged from the studio with a retooled and turbocharged reworking of their seminal debut ‘Lightning To The Nations’, studio techniques and production giving things a gleam of chrome that blinds.
Of course, central to that release was the track that started it all off: ‘Am I Evil’ and it’s never sounded so good.
It’s heavier than the original and where you may lose some of the rough-edged excitement, what you have here is something that sonically rocks harder, befitting the weight of the numerous bands it has influenced and been covered by.
His heart beating as true as ever and the riff that he wrote some forty years ago utterly exploding from the speakers, main man Brian Tatler tears things up like never before and the song proves to be the feral force of nature we all know and love.
For once, a remake that stands shoulder to shoulder to the trailblazer that came before. The 2020 version of ‘Am I Evil’ is going to be one of your tracks of the year, of that there’s no doubt whatsoever.
AM I EVIL?’ is the second single from Lightning To The Nations 2020, set for release on November 27th 2020! Pre-order now: https://smarturl.it/DHLTTN2020
