There are few bands in the universe that create excitement like Thunder in my household and the promise of a new album in September this year was eagerly anticipated along with the accompanying tour that should have been taking place this month.
But 2020 happened and the excitement soon faded. However, the first single from the re-scheduled album, now due for release in May 2021, has just been unleashed and it is a corker!
With an intro that gives more than a nod to ‘Backstreet Symphony’ and Led Zep’s ‘Whole Lotta Love’, this sees the band return to their hard rocking best following the release of the laid back ‘Please Remain Seated’ in 2019 and is their first album of new material in 3 years.
‘Last One Out Turn Off The Lights’ finds Harry James at his thumping best on the drums, Danny Bowes in superb vocal form (was there ever any doubt?), Luke Morley tearing up some growling riffs and a searing guitar solo with Chris Childs and Ben Matthews giving a great depth of sound, the backing singers pitched at just the right level and even a touch of brass added, it’s what every rock fan needs at the moment.
Thunder have been in and out of fashion over the past 30 years and have gone their own ways twice, but whilst fashion passes, class is permanent and rock fans everywhere are now finding that Thunder have matured like a fine wine.
These guys are rock royalty who continue to produce great music, so roll on May 2021 for the full album.
‘Last One Out Turn Off The Lights was released on 5 November 2020
