Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
The word ‘colossal’ has just been redefined and this raging slab of epic metal is the reason why.
One of the most epic and earthy tracks of the year, this cover of the Metallica classic sees the Mongolian rockers weigh in with all their incredible style and produce something literally earth shaking.
Sung in their native tongue and using a mix of traditional and modern instruments, there’s something so elemental about ‘Sad But True’ that you can almost feel the iron tang of blood in your mouth.
This bears the heavy weight of a real darkness and menace to it, the guttural vocals sounding so ancient as to be imbued with all the ages of the Earth, old eyes looking on with wisdom and strength.
Even heavier than the original, this is one case where the masters have somehow become the pupils, their work turned into something that feels just so much older and filled with gravitas by a band who have, so far, existed together a tenth of the time of the metal titans.
You can be sure that Hetfield and Co will love this and it’s a good bet that you will too. They’ve left it late, but this could well be one of THE releases of the year.
