Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM

Cover versions can always be a bit of a mixed bag but it’s nothing but a sheer, unadulterated joy to hear Saxon tear through this, one of the mighty Purple’s heaviest numbers.

The blueprint for so much that followed in its footsteps, this tumultuous bruiser that opened business on the seminal ‘Deep Purple In Rock’ album was probably the first choice for the Barnsley legends to take on.

Absolutely brutal at the time compared to its peers, the intervening fifty years since its release hasn’t mellowed the song and this version is shot through with trademark Saxon steel.

Again, as with their previous Rolling Stones cover, this is a loving homage to the source material where the band balance reverence and the desire to make it their own.

Five decades old and kicking it as hard as ever, this is the perfect meeting of two of the best bands who tilted the world on its axis with the power of loud guitars.
