Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
The passing last year of John Prine, one of the finest songwriters of his generation, was a tragedy that affected many throughout the world.
With his crystal-clear vision, wonderfully melodic phrasing, here was a master craftsman who deserved to be as commercially feted as some of his contemporaries, many of whom held him in the highest esteem as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Roger Waters all singing his praises.
Elles Bailey was one of the newer wave of artists to be influenced and beguiled by his exquisite storytelling so this cover of his masterpiece ‘I Remember Everything’ is both respectfully and beautifully done.
Stripped back, the two acoustic guitars and Bailey’s wonderfully expressive, Americana-tinged voice come together in something wonderful in itself, the song given space to shine and it’s this meeting of sublime material and great performances that make this a must hear.
John Prine would have loved it and there’s no higher praise than that.
