Review by Paul Sabin for MPM

Hailing from Charlotte in North Carolina, 6-piece rock band, The L.A. Maybe formed out of the remnants of a Journey tribute band no less! Having released an EP in 2020, they now pushing out their first full album.

The straight forward punch of `Mr Danger’ gets the album off to a rousing start. Classic AC/DC riffs aplenty, great melodies and a superb gritty vocal from Alvi Robinson lay down the foundations for what is to come.

The manic `Sucker Punch’ releases it mayhem next. Raucous, rollercoaster rhythms and a G n R riff ensure this is going to get a crowd bouncing.

A bluesy riff and heavy backbeat sets the scene for `Oh Sugar’ which contains a killer hook line. `She’s Reckless’ is up next and is a balls out rocker that takes no prisoners. More insanely good guitar licks and catchy lyrics simply force you to jump along to this brilliant track.

`Piece Of Mind’ slows the pace somewhat and sees the piano coming to the fore. Flavours of Lynyrd Skynyrd come through strongly here as this addictive, Southern tinged masterpiece bounds along. Continuing in a similar vein, the power ballad, `When I’m Gone’ follows. Robinson may have been shortlisted as Brian Johnson’s replacement but this guy has so much more to offer, as he ably shows here

`Take Me Away’ brings with it a more modern feel than the previous tracks. A sassy, groover of a song that means business highlights how tight this band is. `Sweet’ reminds me of classic Extreme with its swagger and attitude.

Building the beat up like a runaway freight train comes `Fake’. Robinson’s lyrical rapping mixes well with the steam hammer riffs and pounding drum beats here. Rounding off the album comes `Up Next To You’ with a riff that is a close cousin to `Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap’. A sing it back style song that is bound to make it on to their live set and polishes things off in fine form.

This band know how to Rock n Roll. They’ve not deviated far from the tried and tested formula yet still have managed to create an exciting, vibrant sound that pushes boundaries. If these guys are anything to by, Rock definitely ain’t dead – its live and kicking in North Carolina surrounded by good times & moonshine!!!
