Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
One of the most notorious figures on the scene, Wednesday 13 is part of that select group of artists whose rock horror image and equally wildly imaginative take on goodtime tunes has equally thrilled and chilled.
In a career that has been full of incident, the man better known as Joseph Michael Poole to his nearest and dearest, has blazed a bloody trail in a number of outfits, most notoriously in the Murderdolls and his own solo work, along with a constantly number of evolving projects that has seen him constantly producing new music.
A follow up to his 2019 ‘Necrophaze’ album, this four track EP is a short sharp shock of souped-up punk ‘n’ roll, along with two astutely picked covers.
With a candour that would make Steel Panther blush, opener ‘Your Mother Sucks…’ is an absolute blast of visceral, rough edged fury and gloriously obscene lyrics that will have you smashing up your lounge whilst you dance.
Screwdriver 2 – The Return’ follows in the same vein, it’s pounding and rampaging metal rhythms matching the slasher theme of the words Wednesday growls out, exhorting all sorts of terrible violence with tongue firmly in cheek.
Retooled, his take on INXS’s ‘Devil Inside’ adds a suitably gothic and vaguely unsettling edge missing from the original and on ‘Films’ the unmistakable keyboard sounds used by original artist Gary Numan anchors this cover to the source, albeit more in line with the electronic pioneer’s heavier industrial style.
Once again, Wednesday 13 has tapped into the wild side of life and your inner teenager will be thrilled by the endless ghost house fun of it all. A dark and rocket fuelled rush, this EP brings four perfect slices of mania and stiches them together in a Frankenstein’s Monster patchwork of chainsaw wielding glee.
