Review by Tammy Lomax for MPM
I was a little bit late to the party when it came to Bodom After Midnight but after researching the band in more depth, I became very attached and it’s been quite difficult to gather the right words.
Life, it can be taken in a blink of an eye, and this is an utterly sad reality and more home than ever with the band.
The talented Alexi Laiho passed away in December 2020, just as the wheels were in motion for Bodom After Midnight.
Alexi Laiho was an astonishing musician and he inspired so many people across the world. He closed the door and departed with the band Children Of Bodom in 2019, he carried on pushing forward regardless of setbacks and created Bodom After Midnight.
Bodom After Midnight has of course inherited the Children Of Bodom sound however it is a tad more extreme, a lot faster and Alexi Laiho’s vocals and guitars shine more than ever, they are more aggressive and his range is more diverse than, let’s say, album ‘Hexed’ which was Children Of Bodom’s final album, released 2018.
‘Paint The Sky With Blood’ has been recently released with the official video, it was recorded in Finland in 2020 and is a tribute to Alexi Laiho. He’s added his own take and ideas and created a more intense raw sound, all blended together and the outcome is to be respected and to be admired.
The only thing that bugged me a little was the volume regarding the melodic samples in the background, they seemed slightly louder than what is necessary.
This has been a difficult review because of the emotions and grief behind it all, life is precious and it’s important to remind ourselves not to take it for granted, treat every day like it’s your last and live it to your fullest.
