Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
Ska and punk have always been about freedom, social conscience and having a dance to your own beat. There are very few bands around today that embody that ethos like Millie Manders and The Shut Up, the Norwich quintet continuing to gain ground in the hearts and minds of anyone within earshot of their utterly infectious material.
The full-on rocking, brass soaked ska of ‘Broken Record’ is a prime example of what they do so well, a candy-coated good time but with real heart at the centre.
This time Miss Manders and band explore the still warm embers of a finished relationship, it’s heat still lingering for one side of the equation as the other bids a final farewell.
With a tune that is guaranteed to make you jump around and lyrics that will ring a familiar bell with anyone who’s had trouble letting go after their feelings have been trampled on, this is a bittersweet treat highlighting what a rare and vital talent Millie Manders and The Shut Up have.
The album can be ordered on CD and vinyl formats from the band at https://millie-manders.com/ alongside a range of limited-edition clothing and artwork that raises funds for NHS Charities Together, The Survivors Trust – an umbrella charity for survivors of rape and sexual abuse – and the mental health charities Mind and Papyrus.
