Review by Darren Smith for MPM

Californian Punk rockers The Offspring are back and back in style. With new album “Let The Bad Times Roll” due out on the 16th April through Concord Records, the band have recently released the albums title track as the lead single in the build up to the albums release.

The new album, which is the bands 10th studio offering since they launched themselves on to the world with a self-titled debut in 1989 and their first since “Day’s Go By” in 2012 looks like being right up there, from the quality of the one track on offer so far, with their mega selling offerings from the late 90’s and early 00’s.

As soon as “Let The Bad Times Roll” starts, it takes you flying back to a time of yesteryear when The Offspring were constantly hitting high points on the UK and worldwide charts with hit singles like “Want You Bad”, “The Kids Aren’t Alright”, “Hit That” and their mega smashes “Original Prankster”, “Why Don’t You Get A Job” and “Pretty Fly (For A White Guy). Call it what you will, American Punk, Surfer Punk, Skate Punk, Pop Punk or just Punk, this is music designed to not only get you pogoing but thinking too.

One listen to the thoughtful yet angst fuelled lyrics and you will be in no doubt as to what the song is about…..the state of the world that we are currently residing in. There are no hidden agendas here or lyrics that need thoughtful dissection, this is straight to the point, in your face, punk rock for the 2020’s.

The Offspring were one of the bands that designed the wheel for the Californian Punk scene in the 90’s and with “Let The Bad Times Roll” they are very clearly happy that the design does not need tinkering with. This is quite simply, The Offspring, writing and recording music how they do it best. It is upbeat, it is catchy, it gets you singing along after just one take and it has more hooks in it than a fisherman’s tackle box.

It is great to see Dexter, Noodles and co back, and back in such glorious style. If the rest of the album is as good as this single I may just have to hang out at the beach and play some good old fashioned punk rock, Offspring style, for the day trippers and holiday makers that are heading my way very soon as that is the perfect setting for me to get their point across.

The Offspring are

Bryan “Dexter” Hollands – Vocals & Rhythm Guitar
Kevin “Noodles” Wasserman – Lead Guitar
Pete Parada – Drums
Todd Morse – Bass
