Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM

Journey are back and it’s with a bang, the Kings of U.S. radio rock showing that they still have the chops and tunes that have sold a staggering forty eight million albums to date.

‘The Way We Used To Be’ brings together all those elements that legions of fans all over the world know and love as lush keys, gritty guitars, rock solid rhythm and soaring vocals come together in an anthemic whole.

Catching the zeitgeist, the band reflect on the global lockdown and add their own optimistic and uplifting spin. They may not have released any new material for a decade, but Journey have come back after a tumultuous time for the San Francisco rockers and arguably released the best thing they’ve done in years.

Featuring a great, nuanced vocal from Arnel Pineda and a jaw dropping solo by the ever-outstanding Neil Schon, this harks back to the golden era of ‘Frontiers’ but giving it a very modern sheen.

Built for stadiums, ‘The Way We Used To Be’ is a new classic that will cement their reputation as one of the biggest bands in the world.
