Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
More reliable than a Swiss clock, the thing with Joe Bonamassa is that you know that no matter what he puts his hand to, the results are never less than dazzling.
Such it is with this new single from his forthcoming, as yet untitled, album and it’s a roaring beast that shows that Joe doesn’t need to be with his musical brothers in Black Country Communion to make a lot of noise with verve. Cowritten by Blackberry Smoke frontman Charlie Starr and overflowing with big, Southern Rock flavour, ‘Notches’ sees the New Yorker in full blooded and driving mode, a sleek sledgehammer that hits the target every single time.
Partly autobiographical in content, the track is a towering and raw display of a fighter who has had to work for every single inch of his progress, his determination to get where he’s going seeing fingers worn to the bone and mountains limbed.
Bonamassa certainly knows how to turn it on, the voice one of tempered experience and the guitar playing speaking for itself, his attack never less than surgically precise yet both full of feeling and soul.
The tracks relentless rolling rhythm kicks up road dust but also finds time to add soul with some great backing vocals and the whole shines, a muscle car fined tuned and looking as immaculate as the guitarist himself. King of the streets and King of the Blues, Joe Bonamassa is most definitely back and firing on all cylinders.
