Review by Andy Houghton for MPM
Just days after their thrilling opening set at Sheffield’s Rockin The Bowl festival, Bastette have released their debut EP, ‘Exposed’, and it’s a stunner.
This five-piece band from Blackburn have been together since 2019 with a sound that’s comparable to Halestorm or The Pretty Reckless, and this EP has been much awaited by those who have seen their live performances.
The EP opens with ‘Stand Back’, a moody track with subdued instrumentals that bring Kenyon’s vocals to the fore. Her voice has a commanding power, yet possess a melodic quality that makes for compelling listening.
The next track, ‘Talk About It’, is the EP’s highlight. Punchy and hook-heavy, I’ve witnessed first-hand how this song brings an audience to life when it’s performed live. Lyrically, it deals with the cliché that you should stick together and talk things over in a dysfunctional relationship, when sometimes what you really need to do is to regain control and let the relationship go.
‘Sick & Twisted’ is also catchy, thanks to some memorable riffs, while ‘Rollercoaster’ is exactly that, alternately dipping and soaring to deliver the most melodically varied track on the EP.
Closing track ‘Poison’, the longest on the EP, is an absolute powerhouse – Kenyon is in total control of this song, backed up by the massive instrumentals to bring things to a close on some pure hard rock. It makes for a memorable finale, and a fitting end to an all-too-short EP.
‘Exposed’ is a triumphant release from Bastette, and one that promises exciting times ahead for this talented band. Highly recommended.
