Review by Andy Hawes for MPM
Writing music reviews in an interesting thing to do – you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get when that link drops into your inbox, but every so often what you do get blows the roof off and, in no uncertain fashion, forces you to sit up and take notice.
And that’s exactly what happened when the link for the video for UK based blues rock guitarist/vocalist Kris Barras’ new single ‘Dead Horses’ popped up on my email.
This track really is the absolute business! It kicks copious quantities of ass, takes absolutely no prisoners and pulls no punches whatsoever! It has an absolutely colossal modern hard rock sound, kicking in with the sort of guitar riff that could quite easily move mountains and it doesn’t let up throughout.
It truly has more balls than the world snooker championships, but the melody quotient is also set at a very high level making this an incendiary single release that is tailor-made for rock radio – powerful, with a sound that is both classic and up to date in equal measure.
It’s helped by the fact that Kris Barras delivers a brilliant vocal, handling the highly melodic verses and chorus with effortless ease and plenty of power. Guitar fanatics will also find plenty to enjoy in the highly impressive solo section which suits the vibe of the song perfectly.
In short, this is pretty much the perfect hard rock single release: powerful, melodic, hook-laden, with killer vocals and shredding guitar. What else could you possibly want for your money?
A little research reveals that Kris and his band are hitting the road in a few days across the UK in support of US rockers Black Stone Cherry and on the strength of this single alone, they are a perfect fit! If you’re going to the tour for goodness sake get there early enough to catch their set!
An absolute cast-iron, solid gold belter!
