Review by Brady Moody for MPM
Enter Shikari, the genre-bending British band, has returned with their highly anticipated album, A Kiss for the Whole World. Known for their unique blend of post-hardcore, electronic, and experimental sounds, Enter Shikari delivers yet another bold and thought-provoking musical journey.
If you’ve been following the evolution of Enter Shikari, you’ll know to expect only one thing from them: the unexpected. The bright, brass intro from the opening – and title- track A Kiss for the Whole World sets an energising and optimistic tone before bringing a level of energy that’ll be difficult to maintain over a full album.
It feels odd that the title track isn’t one of the standout tracks. This is more a reflection of the strength of the rest of the album, instead of a weakness in the title track. As an opening track, it sets the tone perfectly and prepares you for something truly magical.
Somehow, Enter Shikari have always been able to take complex, difficult to express feelings and convey them in a easily-digestible portion of flavourful tracks.
A Kiss for the Whole World is no exception. One of Rou Reynold’s creative influences, Friedrich Nietzsche, believed art to be the highest form of self-expression. This influence is as clear as ever with this LP, Rou Reynold has allowed himself to be vulnerable in order to express his thoughts and feelings on an intimate level.
It Hurts has to be one of the standout tracks of the album. The fluidity of the composition takes you on an emotional rollercoaster – demonstrating how well Enter Shikari manage to avoid becoming cliche or stagnant with their composition. T
he message behind the lyrics is one of radiant positivity. This message is delivered with the support of intricately layered instruments which showcases Enter Shikari’s ability to blend impactful messages with their dynamic and genre-defying sound.
Another notable track is Dead Wood. This three-and-a-half minute epic takes listeners on a journey through shifting tempos, intricate instrumentation, and emotionally charged lyrics; tackling relationships and your own feelings
It’s a showcase of Enter Shikari’s musicianship and their ability to craft complex compositions that seamlessly blend different musical styles. The song’s introspective moments create a sense of vulnerability and introspection, while its explosive sections provide an exhilarating release of energy.
Enter Shikari also explores more melodic and atmospheric territories on tracks like Feed Your Soul, Bloodshot (Coda) and giant pacific octopus swirling off into infinity… These songs showcase the band’s ability to create ethereal soundscapes and incorporate electronic textures into their music. The atmospheric interludes serve as moments of reflection and provide a dynamic contrast to the album’s heavier and more aggressive tracks.
The album is a masterclass in blending different sonic elements. Enter Shikari’s fusion of electronic and rock elements is seamless, creating a rich and textured sound palette. The meticulous attention to detail is evident in the layers of synths, intricate guitar work, and the balance between aggressive and melodic passages. The production enhances the overall impact of the songs, capturing the raw energy and intensity of Enter Shikari’s live performances.
A Kiss To The Whole World is a powerful and timely album that solidifies Enter Shikari’s position as one of the most innovative bands in the alternative music scene and ingrains them even further into musical history.. Somehow, they continue to push the boundaries of what can be achieved in modern rock music. This album is a must-listen for both longtime fans and newcomers alike, as it serves as a reminder of the band’s unwavering commitment to their art and their desire to make a positive impact on the world. Enter Shikari has once again delivered a thrilling and memorable musical experience that will resonate with listeners long after the final note fades away.
