Review by Rick Eaglestone for MPM
Florida’s genre defining Cannibal Corpse need no introduction – they return to bludgeon eardrums once more with album number sixteen ‘Chaos Horrific’.
I will admit that I was surprised by what I first perceived as a swift nature of this newest release as it felt it hadn’t been that long since the bands previous release ‘Violence Unimagined’ but 2 years have passed and in actuality they have toured the UK recently so it may have been that initially threw me off.
Straight from the off, dominant basslines and a feeling of foreboding evisceration take hold for opener Overlords Of Violence as the track progresses there are some immense solos embedded which really help to set the tone for the album.
This then flies into Frenzied Feeling with a high level on intensity that CC fans are more than accustomed to
Up next is the jewel in the crown, Summoned For Sacrifice is a great blend of slow purposeful annihilation mixed with splashes of blood splattering intensity.
This is followed by Blood Blind which not only compliments the previous tracks but was one of the first explorations of the new album. Both are also technically very well constructed with the latter incorporating some soundscapes that enrich the overall experience.
No time for instrumental interludes as Vengeful Invasion serves up a plethora of slower elements that change the pace, albeit brief before fittingly title track Chaos Horrific is unleased to a nostalgic fanfare of blast beats and growls wrapped up in a 90’s era bow.
Intensity laden Fracture and Refracture delivers the albums cumulative slab of aesthetic driven screws into the skull before Pitchfork Impalement makes everything that has come before it sound like something Corpsegrinder would win out of a claw machine.
Finally, the duo ofPestilential Rictus and Drain You Empty for sure once again reaffirm just why this band are so revered with unmistakable and quintessential deliveries of CC injected terror.
