Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
The world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll band are back, proving yet again that they’re untouchable. Any new Stones releases are an event and this is certainly no different, their first original material since 2005’s ‘A Bigger Bang’, a new single is the perfect mouth watering taster.
With the nattily titled ‘Hackney Diamonds’ fast approaching, Mick, Keef and Ronnie unleash the ironically titled ‘Angry’ on the world and whilst it’s not short of their trademark rock ‘n’ roll swagger, it injects a sweet chorus into the mix that’s unlike anything they’ve done before.
With a spot-on bluesy solo by Richards bringing things back to their heady and hedonistic early days of sweaty and smoky London clubs, this is a delight that straddles the past, present and future with an ease that only they know how.
Whilst they’re not as feral as they used to be, the Stones have absolutely nothing to prove and could easily just cruise but you get the feeling that they’d balk at the very thought. With a heavy weight of classic songs in their back catalogue, there’s a lot to live up to but when you’re the world’s biggest band and can sell out every stadium you play with ease, there’s a confidence that’s hard to beat.
As anyone who’s seen the Stones recently knows, they’re still hungry and this shows that angry is another state they’re masters in. The crown jewels of the business, these diamond geezers still shine as bright as ever.
