Review by Emma Brown for MPM

Bringing effortless style, a star-studded lineup, and an album as refreshing as the sea breeze, legendary musician and “Mott The Hoople” frontman Ian Hunter presents his new album “Defiance Part 2: Fiction”.

This album follows on from his 2023 album, “Defiance Part 1”, which was well received by fans and critics alike.

At 84 years old, Ian Hunter shows no signs of slowing down, packing this album with the energy and enthusiasm of a spritely teenager, but with the grace and wisdom of a life well lived.

Better yet, he’s opened his jam-packed address book and invited some iconic names to join him in
creating this album, including Queen’s Brian May and the late Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins.

Hunter has also managed to get actor, musician and painter Johnny Depp to create the artwork for this stunning album cover, and even feature on a few songs.

Opening with tracks like “People” and “Fiction”, listeners are welcomed into this record with a warm embrace. These tracks have a relaxed and laid-back feel, but what really cuts through from the beginning of the album is the craftsmanship and quality that you get right from these first few songs.

It’s not surprising that some of the best and most experienced rock musicians on the planet have made a great album, but it is clear that Hunter still cares so incredibly much about the music he’s creating, giving listeners an authentic and relatable album to be enjoyed by many.

The first track to be released from this melodic and charming record was “Precious”, which perfectly captures everything loveable about this album. It’s catchy, classic, easy to listen to and features the excellent songwriting that Ian Hunter is known for.

This early part of the album uses the trustworthy song structures from the golden age of rock to hold all of the other themes that these tracks bring- romance, authenticity, calmness and peace.

The latter part of the album gets a little more rock and roll, and instrumentally these songs generally have more moving parts. “Kettle Of Fish” in particular is much darker and more dramatic than many of the songs on the album, and is a pleasant contrast to the mellow beginning.

Similarly, “Everybody’s Crazy But Me” starts off with these pounding drums, and sonically, you are able to tell who is playing them without ever checking the tracklist, which is the great beauty, and the world’s devastating loss, of Taylor Hawkins.

Notably, the range of different songs on this album combined with each track being so structurally dynamic makes this album entertaining and pleasing to listen to the entire way through.

Furthermore, this album appeals to such a wide audience, from lovers of classic rock to those who just want to feel embraced by such heartfelt and passionate lyricism.

With the collection of world-renowned musicians featured on this album, stunning instrumental tonality, excellent songwriting and Ian Hunter’s effervescent spirit, “Defiance Part 2: Fiction” is sure to be celebrated and loved by many.

“Defiance Part 2: Fiction” is out now.
