It’s not an unpopular belief among song writers that we don’t actually “write” songs. They come to us. We pick them up like human antennas, acting as mere conduits.
If that’s so then our job is to deliver these received melodies in the purest and most unadulterated form possible. That is not what happened with the song titled “Nothing ever Came” we released on our EP titled “Scrolling for Godot” back in 2021. I wanted the song to be something it wasn’t. I wanted to take a minimalist, lo-fi approach to really drive the message of the lyrics home. I wouldn’t listen to advice and insisted. I convinced myself that the song turned out great.
But something kept nagging me about it. I put it out of my mind and got busy with other songs. But the nagging didn’t stop. About half a year ago a friend of mine wanted to hear something a little softer from our catalogue so I put it on. I stopped it ten seconds in. Something was wrong. I called up my Co-producer Adam and told him we need to redo this song.
He said ok. We started a bit but I changed my mind again and I decided to put the time and finances towards a new tune we were working on. But the nagging didn’t stop. It kept torturing me.
Out of the blue another friend of mine David Ottoson from the band Stealing Eden contacted me and told me he’d love to mix something heavy for me. Naturally I decided to throw a balad at him. He reluctantly took it on and we started discovering together what the song always wanted to be. We replaced the steel string guitar with a piano (Jim McLaren) accented by a Spanish nylon guitar and synth.
We revamped the entire rhythm section and added hot leads and were ecstatic by the results, except now the vocals didn’t quite sit well with the new completely different vibe. So we ended up re-doing the vocals as well. The song is now what it always wanted to be. It kept telling me I got it wrong. So the new title, as Sam of SODEH records pointed out was sitting there all along as the main hook , is “Tell Me I’m Wrong”. Hope you like it! – SUCKERTRAP
