Review by Scottie Brown for MPM

Black Diamonds is a band hailing from St. Gallen Rhine, Switzerland. After making waves in their home country with their last album No-Tell Hotel, the band has returned with their upcoming album Destination Paradise.

This album is a culmination of the band’s best work along with elements that evolve Black Diamonds’ sound with utter perfection.

Destination Paradise is musically thorough filled with guitar solos, face melting hooks, and balancing in the music that makes the pacing of the album feel perfect. The lyrics of the album can touch on anything from heartache or real-life moments all the way to partying and having a good time. Destination Paradise has something for everyone.

Destination Paradise opens with a powerful track “Through Hell and Back”, which is a perfect song to set the tone for what to expect in the rest of the album. The first song is filled with catchy riffs, a powerful verses, all topped off with a bouncing chorus that could make the body move. The next song, one of the official singles “After the Rain” slow things down.

This song could take anyone back to a ballad from the 80’s. Black Diamonds does an amazing job of creating a bit of nostalgia with a modern twist. “Bottoms Up” is another notable track on the album as this switches pace both musically and lyrically. This is one of the heavier songs on the album, as singer Mich Kehl takes a more raw approach vocally while Andi Barrels’ groovy bass lines line’s up perfectly with Chris Blade’s keyboards add a bit of a synth type sound.

This is all tied down with Manu Peng’s drumming keeping the tempo and beat in a tight musical unit in solidarity. Songs like the 3rd single off the album “Rock N Roll is my Religion” are just a fun song where the band showcases their love for playing and writing music and why it means so much to them.

Both lyrically and musically Destination Paradise touches on everything from heartbreak, fighting for your place, or just overall having an amazing time with the people around you. The messages throughout the entire album and relatable and can touch everyone and make them want to headbang or move their feet. Black Diamonds does not shy away from showing their human side while delivering an authentic nostalgic experience with a moder twist. People say Rock n’ roll is dead, but I think Black Diamonds would beg to differ.

In closing, this album is an evolutionary step that is necessary for the band. Black Diamonds took the best qualities of their previous albums and managed to make an album where they can change but keep that same nostalgic sound that their fans know them for.

Lyrically, it taps into emotions and situations that we all deal with every single day. Destination Paradise creates a situation where the both the Journey and the destination are just as important. Between the singles that have been released and the rest of the album, if there is anyone missing that classic rock n roll sound with a modern twist, Destination Paradise is the album to sink your teeth into to play over and over again.
