Review by Andy Houghton for MPM
Best known for his classic rock musicals Vampires Rock and Anything For Love, featuring the music of Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman, Steve Steinman is poised to release his latest single, ‘Everything They Said Was True’.
With the massive success of his first original album ‘Take A Leap Of Faith‘, Steinman attracted the attention of rock icon and music composer John Parr. Parr is known the world over for his Grammy-nominated hit song ‘St Elmo’s Fire’ and his duet with Meat Loaf on the US hit track ‘Rock n Roll Mercenaries’.
Parr has toured with some of the world’s best, including Tina Turner, Heart and The Beach Boys, so when Steinman got a call from Parr asking if would he like to have a track for his next album, he jumped at the chance to work with the music legend.
Parr’s song was originally penned for Meat Loaf back in 1982, but was never recorded. “I’m so over the moon,” said Steinman. “To have been given this chance, what an opportunity to be able to work with John, it’s a dream come true.
The release of ‘Everything They Said Was True’ has been added extra poignancy with the sad death of Meat Loaf earlier this month, and Steve’s performance on the single pays a fitting tribute to Meat Loaf’s inspiration whilst also making the track firmly his own.
Weaving a tale of contrition and redemption (“I went crazy for a while / You gave an inch but I took a mile”), Steinman’s powerful performance wrings maximum impact from Parr’s lyrics. His vocals make a perfect match for the instrumentals and his expressiveness showcases his skill not just as a vocalist but as a master storyteller.
The single contains some pleasing switches in tempo, particularly with a soaring uplift mid-track followed by an all-too-brief guitar solo. It’s a well-crafted song, and well-executed too.
Recording his own material has already proved a massive hit for Steve Steinman, and this new track builds on the momentum that’s been growing since the release of his first album, ‘Take A Leap Of Faith‘, in 2021. The quality of ‘Everything They Said Was True’ suggests that album number two is going to be even bigger…
‘Everything They Said Was True’ is available to pre-order from Amazon Music and iTunes on Monday 31 January, 2022.
