Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
Whilst the bombast of opera has always been a great match for metal, a pinnacle reached by Wagner’s monumental ‘Ride of the Valkyrie’, Italian rockers Violet Blend bring this playful Guiseppe Verdi standard to fiery life.
More than just a rock cover of a classic, the selection is a powerful and stinging rebuke to the misogyny at the heart of its lyrics as singer Giada Celeste Chelli rips things up.
As part of a campaign against gender discrimination and violence, this specially recorded track shines new ferocious light through old windows and the vocals mix suitably stately phrasing with a steely tone.
The slight shimmer of keys at times is a distraction but overall, this works extraordinarily well and may well see converts from Pantera to Puccini and Motorhead to Mozart. Violet Blend tackle a huge issue face on and deal a very hefty blow with this scorcher.
