Review by Maria Glover for MPM
As I reveal the sixth album by Dan Reed Network, 10 years after they reformed in 2012, I’m not expecting a wholly unique or innovative venture but more classic, much- loved DRN grooves and funk.
I’m not surprised to find that this album features a strong semblance of the definitive DRN sound and I enjoy it more than I had expected to if I’m honest.
From the well-written and nuanced ‘The Ghost Inside’ to the light and undemanding ‘Starlight’, through funk and bounce you will not have experienced for some time in ‘Stumble’ and ‘Supernova’, this album has all the elements to set the hearts aflutter of every DRN fan the world over.
Opening track ‘Pretty Karma’ opens with a gnarly beat then the riff kicks in, the smooth muted vocal building towards a catchy chorus where it can take flight. ‘Supernova’ is effervescent and a definite guilty pleasure with it’s pop-py feel.
The title track is loaded with attitude, cleverly woven together to reveal new elements on every listen, and incredibly melodic, as society is appraised and critiqued. ‘Where’s the Revolution’ charges out at me like the lovechild of Backstreet Boys and Shena Easton. And I like it!
There’s poignancy and emotion in ‘I See Angels’, and newsreels or announcer-type voice-overs (‘Homegrown’ and ‘Supernova’).
The stuttering beat meets with heavy riffs and is joined in the party by a saxophone in the funky as hell ‘Homegrown’ which has to be a highlight for anyone who has the gift of hearing.
The heavier intro to ‘Are You Ready’ refocuses my attention before the final and best-named track ‘Unfuck My World’. Intense and brooding to start with, the sweet request is delivered with fabulous aplomb and deliciously harmonious and dulcet vocals.
As part of an impressive back catalogue and with the loyal Dan Reed Network fanbase this is an excellent album. Will it retain my attention when fighting with all the other music in my inbox, I’m not sure to be honest but I keep finding new parts to it so who knows.
Definitely a must-have for all DRN fans and well worth giving this a try if you’ve never even heard of them.
