Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM

“It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock ‘n’ roll” we were told by AC/DC. No one knows that better than Jim Hedra, the singer/guitarist with metal warriors Hedra.

Life’s thrown seemingly endless flaming arrows their way but with this new EP the band have their biggest chance yet to get to where they so richly belong, a triumphant roll of the dice that will see their fortune finally change.

Put together with a class and quality that exceeds their previous, solidly entertaining and hard rocking, output, ‘The Pecking Order’ is a six-track slab of ruthless modern metal that bristles with invention and intent.

New single ‘Jackdaw’ leads the charge, its blend of Five Finger Death Punch aggression and soaring Alter Bridge widescreen ambition a powerful combination, the seesawing riff like a blow to the solar plexus. Heralding a new age for the band, the track uses light and shade to devastating effect and with its well-crafted song writing and polished production it’s an adrenaline rush of barely tamed proportions.

The rest of the EP follows in a blitz of big riffs, tank division percussion and soul raw vocals, the punches coming hard, heavy and relentless. The pounding ‘Stolen’, a caustic and atmospheric ‘Suchi’ and the widescreen and passionate ‘Avis Mogi’ all thrill with their brutality and beauty intertwined.

Hedra know exactly when to take the foot off the gas too though so the material gets a chance to breathe, spreading its wings and showing that they’re far from the one trick pony groove that some of their peers fall into.

There’s a real intelligence at play here and the angular and melodic ‘Storm Clouds’ shows both muscle and razor sharp teeth, the track one of the most accomplished things the quintet have ever recorded. Similarly, ‘Head Held High’ is another triumph, its gloriously skyscraping sound pointing to their bright future as they put the past behind them.

Heavy, thrilling and devastating, ‘The Pecking Order’ shows that Hedra are genuine contenders and proves once again that betting on the underdog brings the greatest
rewards.
