Review by Tammy Lomax for MPM

We are already nearly half way through 2023! Was it just me or did that winter feel endless?

Spring is in full action! Plants are popping through the ground and sprouting their colourful heads, the sunshine is peering through the clouds and it’s absolutely wonderful.

Brand new band Swollen Teeth also popped their first bit of material onto the table. Their self-titled E.P was released at the end of April and it is a very engrossing and enticing listen.

Swollen Teeth was created by Slipknot’s DJ Sid Wilson and producer Ross Robinson. The new E.P was produced by Wilson at his farm studio out in Iowa. Purposely mirroring the Indigo Ranch studio compound in Malibu, where Slipknot recorded their first two albums.

The self-titled E.P was also released via the brand new label, Blowed Out Records. Robinson kick started this new label with Ghostemane mastermind, Eric Whitney and former SideOneDummy Records owner Bill Armstrong.

Sid Wilson presumed he would never have found another group of humans outside of Slipknot that knew the formula to transparency through frequencies and not through appearance.

Ross Robinson also added that himself and Sid listened to rough ideas and emotions ran high. He found himself getting chills throughout his body to that familiar molten metal pulse he loves so much.

Swollen Teeth have been quietly creeping around in the background and have played a few shows together. This is the first release of their material and altogether it is extremely addictive and completely captivating.

After listening, it became very clear to me that this was in every aspect, a fresh take on metal that I have never heard before. A combination of nu metal and punk which sounds familiar but Swollen Teeth’s style is so far from familiar it’s almost unbelievable. My ears pricked up and my attention was instantly absorbed as soon as I pressed play. The impressive intensity kept me on the edge of my seat.

15 minutes of utter skull-battering, heavy, twisted, spontaneously intended metal that summoned my metal demon.

Swollen Teeth’s formula is clever. Their overall grooves and beats are deliberately unpredictable, highlighting versatility but dominating consistency with a tonne of unique control. It’s massively confusing but gratifyingly appreciated. The most disciplined messiness my ears have ever experienced, what an absolute clout of music which met my expectations absolutely. This is a very short E.P but it unquestionably packs an absurd amount of wallop, do go check it out as soon as you possibly can, it won’t disappoint.
