Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM

Shout it loud, rock’s not dead and with incendiary new release ‘Beyond The Flames’, Nottingham outfit Phoenix Lake have declared that they’re here and ready to take on the world.

With a growing reputation as a must-see live act and a forthcoming appearance at Bloodstock, the quartet have managed to distil their firepower into something that brings to mind the sweeping cinematic vision of bands like Within Temptation and thrown in their own crushing heft.

Kicking off with a rampaging riff, ‘Saviour’ comes out swinging, the urgent vocals of singer Lana Phillis irresistible and intoxicating, the whole nitro-fuelled experience laced with sugar-rush melody.

Bigger still, ‘Reflections’ smashes in with the sort of wrecking ball heaviness that Rammstein have made a career on before everything takes flight like being strapped to a rocket launched into the stratosphere.

This continues to build until the mystical feel of the middle eight and then things really kick up into the epic, the sound overwhelming and the unstoppable ‘Come Alive’ glories in some face melting fretwork from Ash Wilson that could destroy city blocks.

It all closes with the dramatic peaks of ‘Faithless’, the punishing heaviness and soaring vocals telling a tale of struggling against demons in a very real, touching and powerful way, the cinematic approach one that could see them filling arenas with the sound.

Without doubt, Phoenix Lake are seeing their potential realised and you get the feeling that big things are on the way for them, they certainly have the passion and songs to drive them ever forwards. This is music to make you feel alive.
