Review by Rick Eaglestone for MPM

Kicking off the new year with a fireball of frenzy German-based melodic death metal formation Hiraes return with latest Dormant.

Opener Through The Storm erupts with a cacophony of speed and fury laden with soloswhich interlocks with blistering precision for the anthemic We Owe No One

Continuing with record’s lyrical themes explore the struggles and resilience of society amid modern challenges is Undercurrent which takes on a largely softer approach but incorporating some harsher elements to really amplify the albums empowering message to the listeners to find calmness and strength by focusing within themselves.

Moving into the duo of Chance To Fail and About Lies the album gets swept into a wave of ferocity with particularly razor-sharp vocal delivery and pummelling drum patterns. This is then cleverly followed up by the short instrumental interlude serving Come Alive which even in itself is flawlessly delivered on a technical scale with varying degrees of atmospheric to then lay waste for easily one the albums heaviest offering Ocean Child

Nightflight almost pre-empts this and well, quite frankly unleashes hell on a savage scale the intensity is honestly not matched before or after!

Taking a more industrial approach is Red Soil which has some really bleak undertones wrapped around some huge soundscapes and the album evaporates into title track Dormant is hard to see just where the melodic in melodic death metal is as this album has been largely an attack on the senses but its hard even through this not to fell uplifted albeit a bit battered after completing the full cycle of the ten tracks that have been presented

I went back and revisited the bands 2021 debut, Solitary and its evident that Hiraes have incorporated a much darker intensity amongst a thunderous journey of sophistication.
