Review by Rick Eaglestone for MPM
Newly signed to Metal Blade, Denmark’s Lifesick have released a brand new three track EP whicheven sees the band steer into unfamiliar territory for Love and Other Lies
Opening track Every Unpleasant Emotion is in stark contrast to anything the band have done before, firstly it is acoustic, but more than that the clean western style vocals completely change the dynamic of the band, it sounds like something that could’ve been included in the TV show Westworld.
GuitaristNicolai Lindegaard explains.
“I listen to a lot of old American folk and country from pre-World War II; there’s just something real about music from that time,” adds Shoshan. “So for it to fit into the Lifesick universe, we tweaked it with some darker tones and layers. Some have said it could be a theme song for a true crime series.”
Following this and resuming normal service with a snarling dose of grit is Rude Awakening which has the first of guest appearances on the EP with Mark Wheelan from American death metallers Fuming Mouth lending his razor-sharp tones to this providing a cohesive cacophony of skull rattling technicality.
Lastly and hugely surprising is the contribution of Nails’ Todd Jones for Reverse Birth which is a huge coo for Lifesick as the band have wanted to work with him for a long time and well, he rarely does vocal contributions, and it should come as no surprise that it’s nearly four minutes of complete obliteration which undoubtedly should be unsurprising that this is my highlight track of the release
