Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
Making some big noise from the Valleys, Welsh outfit Yaki Dah are the latest in a long and illustrious line of musicians from that part of the UK who have plans to conquer the world.
Managing to bring a head spinning mix of styles into this latest release, the outfit unleash six new tracks that deftly illustrate their range and chameleon-like ability to tap into their influences with aplomb. Straight outta Swansea, the quartet are known for their rumbunctious live shows and singular sense of humour and they’ve managed to capture this all and more into this new EP, a promise fulfilled.
Kicking off with the big, grungy title track, the adrenaline and temptation to smash down walls is almost overwhelming, the following ‘Do Me Wrong’ an almost reckless blast of hard rocking energy. Things then take an unexpected turn with the acoustic and folk-infused ‘Goth Girl’, its wistful and spiralling melody making it a highlight of the release as the band dig into their more sensitive side.
It’s back to business with the full-tilt rolling boogie of the ballsy ‘Hills in the Night’ and the sashaying swagger tipping into punk metal with ‘Lair of the Vampire’ that keeps the target moving with dizzying speed.
Closing with the brawling ‘You, Me and Lee’ adding a vitriolic hooligan bounce to the blend, this hints more at a band having fun and refusing to be pigeonholed rather than their drifting rudderless and seeking a solid direction to go in. What they do next is anyone’s guess but be sure, you’ll be hearing a lot more from YAKI DAH.
