Opening for MAMMOTH WVH last night at the O2 Institute, Birmingham, THE DUST CODA proved that they are a force to be reckoned with in the NWOCR music scene. With a captivating performance and a setlist packed with powerful songs, they provided a great opening set which, no doubt garnished them with a flourish of new fans. Here’s a look at the band, their music, and the highlights of their live show.
THE DUST CODA were formed in 2015 in London and have quickly gained a reputation for their hard-hitting rock sound and dynamic live performances. The band consists of John Drake on vocals, Adam Mackie on guitar, Tony Ho on bass, and Scott Miller on drums. Their music is a blend of classic rock influences and modern rock energy, creating a sound that appeals to a wide audience, and has given them a dedicated fanbase.
Since their formation, THE DUST CODA have released three albums, each one encapsulating their growth and evolution as a band. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2017, introduced them to the rock world with tracks like “Weakness” and “Sweet Love Is Gone.” Their follow-up album, “Mojo Skyline,” released in 2021, solidified their place in the rock scene with hits like “Limbo Man” and “Breakdown,” to their latest long player, “Loco Paradise” released in 2023, which has given us two of to-nights tracks, “ Call Out The Dogs” and “Road To Hell”.
The night began with THE DUST CODA taking the stage as the opening act for MAMMOTH WVH. From the moment they walked on the dimly lit stage and started playing, it was clear that they were determined to make the most of their time in the spotlight. The band kicked off their set with “Limbo Man,” a high-energy track that immediately got the crowd’s attention. John Drake’s powerful vocals and Adam Mackie’s impressive guitar work set the tone for the rest of the performance.
Following “Limbo Man,” the band launched into “Breakdown,” a song from their “Mojo Skyline” album. Some of the crowd, clearly familiar with the track, started singing along to the catchy chorus. The chemistry on stage was evident, with each member contributing to the overall energy of the performance.
One of the standout moments of the night was their performance of “Dream Alight.” This song showed a slightly softer, more melodic side to the band. Drake’s vocals were emotive and compelling, drawing the audience into the song’s narrative. The crowd seemed to be enjoying the performance, of this more melodic number full of heartfelt lyrics.
“Call Out The Dogs” brought the energy back up with its driving rhythm and powerful riffs. The band’s tight performance and infectious enthusiasm had the crowd pumping their fists and dancing along. It was clear that THE DUST CODA had snared the crowd and were keeping them engaged and entertained.
“The More It Fades,” another track from “Mojo Skyline,” was another definite crowd-pleaser. The song’s anthemic quality and relatable lyrics resonated with the audience. Drake’s vocal delivery was passionate, and the band’s performance, as always, was spot-on, making it one of the highlights of the night.
The set closer, “Road To Hell,” ended their performance on a high note. This hard-hitting rock track was the perfect choice and was sure to leave a lasting impression on the crowd. The band’s energy was at its peak, and the audience responded with enthusiastic cheers and applause. The powerful guitar solos, driving bassline, and pounding drums created an electrifying atmosphere that had everyone on their feet.
THE DUST CODA’s live performance is a result of talent and hard work. John Drake’s stage presence is commanding, and his vocal range impressive. Adam Mackie’s guitar skills are a perfect complement to Drake’s vocals, with solos that are both technically proficient and emotionally charged. Bassist, Ricky, a former member of the band, who was deping for long haired Tony Ho for the two Mammoth shows, and Scott Miller provided a solid rhythm section, keeping the energy high with a concussive wave of seismic proportions.
Throughout the set, the band members interacted with each other and the audience, creating a sense of connection that added to the overall experience. Drake took a moment to thank MAMMOTH WVH for the opportunity to open for them, expressing gratitude and excitement for the rest of the night.
