“What we have witnessed this evening – whether it be wondrous costumes, super-polished choreography, or sheer aptitude in stage props – is the elevation of quality music to a Broadway or West End scale. Mountains are scaled and the flag of success is nailed to the peak.” Thus read my summary of Sabaton’s 2023 headline show at Cardiff’s sold-out 7,500 capacity Utilita Arena.
Billed as the ‘Tour to End All Tours’ last year’s tour was a spectacular highlight, an immersive production that will live long in the memories of both my wife Kelly, who photographed the entire Cardiff show, and myself. To describe the evening in the Welsh capital city as a mere gig is failing to do Sabaton the justice they thoroughly deserve.
Currently touring the USA, as special guests to British metal legends Judas Priest, inspirational Swedish metallers Sabaton are closing in on the notable landmark of the 25th anniversary of their formation. Their articulate vocalist Joakim Brodén takes time out from a busy gig-day schedule in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to have a chat, and a share a chuckle or three, with MPM’s Gary Spiller.
Looking ahead to a further six weeks on the road criss-crossing the States with The Priest Joakim also gives the low-down on the worldwide release of the recording of their Amsterdam show, on Friday 11th October, in approximately 1,000 cinemas. The scale of their production and the logistics involved are discussed alongside the energy created throughout. Catch this behemothic production in cinemas for one night only – tickets on sale https://sabaton.film/
Joakim reflects upon the depth of influence that his band has inspired over the years and the successful achievements beyond their wildest dreams as well as collaborations with Van Canto and Nanowar of Steel. He also gives hint at the progress being made for the band’s eleventh album and going from drinking beer and listening to Judas Priest to actually touring with them!
