Review by Tammy Lomax for MPM

Working from the ground up, Swedish melodic death metal band Soilwork have released a brand new single, “Spirit Of No Return” via Nuclear Blast Records.

Alongside this energised release is a music video that captivates the powerful force that is Soilwork, representing the bands resurgence and renewed strength.

The video was produced by Daniel Wahlström and compliments the song’s theme of perseverance and transformation.

Furthermore, Soilwork has injected some fresh energy into the mix by having long-time live guitarist Simon Johansson join, his contribution has assembled Soilwork’s sound to a positive height of revolutionised music.

Frontman Björn Strid comments on the song: “Spirit Of No Return” is a fierce reminder of the past, but also an introduction of the new Soilwork era.

Where we’ve taken the thrasher early days and dressed it in a new heavier suit.

Lyrics are dealing with the urge of belonging and fitting in and how in the end it can be disastrous as you abandon your true self.”

The track has some respectable weight, you can really sense that thrash feel as they get straight into it with those speedy riffing guitars and accelerated heart beats from the drums.

The vocals feel versatile, they are severely intense, hammering and keeping a good pace, running consistent and in time with the tempo, but they add some cleans into the mix and they work well with the melodic elements, offering powerful emotions that feel very uplifting and positive.

Soilwork are currently bobbing about on the Rising From The North huge European tour with In Flames and Arch Enemy which ends in November.

SOILWORK are:
Björn “Speed” Strid – vocals
Simon Johansson – guitars
Sven Karlsson – keyboards
Sylvain Coudret – guitars
Bastian Thusgaard – drums
Rasmus Ehrnborn – bass
