Review by Rick Eaglestone for MPM
Modern metal sensations Jinjer return with their highly anticipated fifth studio album Duel.
Jinjer are well known for going against the heavy metal rulebook with their amalgamation of elements which is immediately demonstrated with opener Tantrum which has rolling drums, djent stye bass tones with the wave of range from vocalist Tatiana Shmayluk which flows effortlessly into the hypnotic vibe of follow up Hedonist which has a wonderful narrative as well as multi layered musicianship.
Rogue holds true to intensity levels that have followed the band through their previous four releases, but experience has given the band the opportunity to refine and hone in on newer aspect which is delivered with a crushing force, this in complimented with a combination of delicate tones a huge all-encompassing riffs on Tumbleweed.
Moving into quintessential Jinjer territory with Green Serpent it must be said that this really the albums crowning glory with equal modern an early 00’s parts & coupled with Kafka and Dark Bile this trio is easily the most listened part of the album.
Duel is certainly an album crafted for their dedicated, ever-growing fanbase which I can see not only being a appear to wider audience snaring new fans to music. A a future live favourite follows up with Fast Draw is certainly a contender to create carnage in many a circle pit and get added to a few gym playlists in the process with its unapologetic level of chaos and pure outlet aggression.
In another sweeping change Someone’s Daughter only confirms the high production levels that flow through this album this is demonstrated in droves as the band continue their long-lasting collaboration with accomplished producer Max Morton as it seemingly transitions with genre splitting twists and turns because just as you think you’ve heard the albums heavier tracks the band unleash another serving of severity in the form of A Tongue So Sly.
The album concludes with title track Duel with has some stunning instrumentation and really encompasses the aesthetic of the album with an undeniable drive, focus and a sound that is impossible to replicate.
