Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM

Sweden has always been a cool country, the home of ABBA and Ikea, it’s produced more than its fair share of great bands with Ghost, Opeth, The Hives, Sabaton, Evergrey and Royal Republic amongst many others flying the flag. Making their own bid for world domination, punk pop quintet Chasing Penguins are certainly getting noticed and with the smash ‘Bitter Glory’ coming out at the end of last year, the band have reached even higher with new single ‘Curtain Call’.

Built around gorgeous vocals, big guitar riffs and an irresistibly soaring chorus, the song shows the further development of the band, stretching their wings and absolutely crushing it. Somewhat ironically, the juxtaposition of the lyrical theme of drifting apart aligned with an utterly sugar rush high of the music all just works perfectly, the heartrending theme made utterly uplifting by the pure passion and lightness of touch the band display. An early contender for Summer anthem, ‘Curtain Call’ is an absolute killer song, beautifully written and performed with breathtaking heart. You need this in your life. The future is black and white.
