Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
It takes a huge amount of courage to take on a System of a Down fan favourite but Lolli Wren, AKA The Fairy Voicemother on YouTube, takes on the challenge and puts a stunning new spin on it.
Taking away the big guitars and twin vocals of the original, this is a darker and edgier version that hints at something more dangerous lying just below the surface.
Of course, the vocal performance is a jaw dropping one that delves into the pain, despair and uncertainty of the lyrics in a way that’s full of bone-deep soul, Wren able to put subtle nuances into every word, phrase and breath.
Without being in any way ‘showy’, the singer has created something that would make angels weep and utterly eschews the overly dramatic and forced not-so-subtle manipulation that others may display as here, less is most certainly more.
She may have made her name as someone who does analysis videos and coaches vocalists, but her engaging and instantly loveable personality is backed by a mighty talent that’s displayed perfectly here in all its technicolour glory. Absolutely sublime and a deft display of how you can make something truly your own. This is one of the best things you’ll hear all year.
