Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
Any new release from multi-award winners The Blackheart Orchestra is cause for celebration but they’ve outdone themselves this time. Very few Christmas songs bear repeat listening throughout the year but what multi-instrumentalists Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington have created with ‘Winter Majesty’ is something so beautiful and timeless it captures both the soul and mind completely.
Being enveloped in the world this creates, it’s hard to believe that this won’t become an annual favourite, soundtracking an animated film made for the season, destined to become as well loved as ‘The Snowman’.
Starting with the delicate sound of instruments that bring to mind a December sun hitting a burbling stream in a wintery landscape, Mostyn’s unique vocals come in full of a child-like wonder at the beauty of all she sees. From there layers are added, bit by bit in gossamer flushes as it builds to its joyful and questioning chorus. Eschewing all the fake Yuletide fireworks and tinsel that adorn most songs, this genuinely catches the delicate spirit and soul of the season without any form of compromise.
With touches of Kate Bush’s glorious ‘December Will Be Magic Again’ , this number matches the purity of that number and can join Greg Lake’s ‘I Believe In Father Christmas’ as one of the greatest Christmas songs of all time. A song to cherish, take to your heart and lose yourself in, ‘Winter Majesty’ is probably going to be the most sublime thing you’ll hear all year. A work of truly breathtaking and exquisite splendour.
