Review by Peter Finn for MPM

Tuk Smith & The Restless Hearts is an American rock band from Nashville founded and fronted by former Biters leader, Tuk Smith, from Atlanta.

The band released their debut single, ‘What Kinda Love’ on 10th January 2020, and their debut album ‘Ballad of a Misspent Youth’ on 4th November 2022. The current band line-up consists of Tuk Smith (vocals and guitar) with Matthew Curtis (bass), Nigel Dupree (drums) and Tobin Dale (guitar).

‘Troubled Paradise’ containing 4-tracks, is the bands second EP, and is due to be released on Tuk Smith’s own label, Gypsy Rose Records on 16th October 2025.

‘Troubled Paradise’ opens with the title-track, the opening riff and punching beat grabs your attention instantly. Soaring melodies entwine seamlessly with lyrics that latch onto the subconscious. The sound is all encompassing as it swirls around your ears, the structured layers of the guitars and the rhythm section makes everything feel big. ‘Troubled Paradise’ has not just hit the ground running; it’s hit the ground at light speed.

The galactic sounds continue with ‘Runnin’ With The Wild Ones’, quick beats with high-speed narrated lyrics create a charging tempo. Smith smoothly and cleverly name drops the Reckless Hearts, into the opening verse. This stadium anthem tells the age-old story of young love, with all the highs and lows that accompany it. You find yourself hooked, listening to the story as the powerful music carries you though the chapters.

Tuk Smith introduces ‘Sadie Mae’ to us with a sleazy vocal, akin to someone who may have overindulged in some of life’s excesses, creating a character that brings swagger to the track. Smith delivers the heartfelt lyrics with passion, spiralling guitars and supportive beats contribute to the emotions contained within. The result is a powerful cocktail of 80’s LA rock, a rich power ballad with a shot of ingenious guitar breaks, that leaves you lusting for more.

The final track on this excellent EP is ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’. The pace slows with the introduction of an acoustic guitar; the feelings intensify as Tuk Smith opens his heart. The tempo ebbs and flows with Smith’s smooth lyrics. Just close your eyes and savour the moment.

Tuk Smith & The Restless Hearts have gifted us a fine piece of work, it keeps the appetite whetted from last year’s ‘Rogue to Redemption’, until the release of their next full length offering. The mix and styles of songs, the musician-ship, and production contained within ‘Troubled Paradise’ showcase Tuk Smith’s songwriting masterclass. Treat yourself to a copy, and join the band on this wonderful, if all too brief journey. Watch out for live dates later in the year, as Tuk Smith & The Restless Hearts tour with Danko Jones, and have a Sunday slot at Planet Rockstock.
