Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM

There’s so much love in this version of Muddy Waters’ feisty classic, the masterful Mr Marsden sprinkling his own magic on this prime cut from his recent ‘Chess’ album.

Whilst the original is a snarling, brawling statement of intent, Bernie brings a more laid-back vocal and positive shine, though his guitar playing is razor sharp as always.

With a bounce and a swagger, this is a beautifully poised blast of pure blues and its rich production imbues it with an authenticity that straddles both the source material and this modern interpretation with ease.

With an enviable pedigree and class of his own, the guitarist ‘brings all this to bear in something that you’re sure that Waters himself would have approved of, the tenderness and respect part of its very DNA.

With something that should appeal to fans old and new, this is a living, breathing history lesson that shows exactly why Chess and artists like Muddy Waters are still so influential today.

Modern music would look very different without these pioneers and there’s no finer artist than Bernie Marsden to teach just that. Essential.
