Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
When one of the biggest bands in the world announces not only a new single but a forthcoming album and tour to support it, the ripples are nothing short of seismic.
The opening salvo from their twelfth studio album ’72 Seasons’, due April 2023, ‘Lux Æterna’ roars with an old school fire that taps into the early 1980’s sounds of the emerging speed metal rock ‘n’ roll that Raven and Motorhead made their own.
With the driving riffs of Hetfield and Hammett leading the attack, the adrenaline surging through their veins and the runaway locomotive of Ulrich and Trujillo smashing everything in its way, this is a white knuckle, flesh melting thrill ride.
There is, of course, a huge hook and melody at its heart, the anthemic feel bound to be a future live favourite, the whole causing sore throats as well as sore necks as the twin exercise of songs at top volume whilst headbanging put bodies to the test.
A ferocious and powerful promise of all that’s to come, this nicely has its roots in the past whilst firmly blazing a trail for the future. At this point, Metallica are unstoppable and kings of all they survey.
