Review by Ritchie Birnie for MPM
What the hell is it about disaster and adversary that makes a good song? Kiwis Black Smoke Trigger have taken the devastation of Cyclone Gabrielle and spat out a musical masterpiece with Perfect Torture.
It opens like the literal calm before the storm with just an acoustic and the incredible voice of Baldrick. He instantly has me thinking of Matt James of Blacktop Mojo in looks as well as vocally. As the acoustic winds down and the haunting vocals recede Baldrick builds like the storm hitting and the songs creates it’s own power, it becomes its own destructive force and is a magical piece of musicianship with the band creating a song of huge dimensions, emotions and sonic wizardry. The guitar solo by Charlie Wallace is an cyclone all on its on.
I cannot pass without mentioning the video for the song as there are so many parts to it. Done by the band themselves, they gathered up pieces of the scattered and battered Hawke’s Bay and put it in the set. Destruction from their garden, from the beaches and surrounding areas and the end result is outstanding but we should not be surprised as they are making a name for themselves with videos especially the previous “The Way Down” and “Caught in the Undertow”. Go check them out as they are cinematically and sonically brilliant.
This is a really impressive song and video and with the boys supporting the mighty Bruce Dickinson on his UK tour shortly we will get a chance to catch up with the band live and see if they are just as impressive on a stage as they are on video and recorded, I for one cannot wait!
