Violet Redfern’s head is ‘In A Mess’ as she releases her debut single. Violet’s father Troy Redfern is well known throughout the blues world and beyond as a musical visionary, a maestro on the slide guitar.
It seems this musical pedigree runs in the family, Violet writing and recording her own music before reaching her teenage years. Initially focusing on playing drums Violet appeared alongside her father playing drums as the opening act at Hereford Blues Festival in 2010 when she was merely 12 years of age.
This debut single features that same duo, Violet on vocals and drums and her father on guitar, bass and keyboards. It was recorded at Troy’s Parliament Barn Studios near Hay-on-Wye.
Opening with a guitar full of sorrow from Troy, In A Mess conveys a tale of a broken relationship. ‘Make my colours turn to grey, you make my passion go away’. Both the excellent guitar from Troy and Violet’s atmospheric, somewhat haunting, vocal emphasise the emotional turmoil Violet is going through.
Her ‘mind in a mess’ Violet is feeling trapped ‘caught in your head … your heart … your mind … your bed … your soul’ it’s time to ‘get out of here’.
The power and energy of the music increases, fueled by a wonderful drum beat as Violet plots her release. The increasingly mystic sound of Troy’s guitar adding to the intrigue of the escape plan. ‘Kiss me bye … I ain’t coming back’. ‘I just pack my stuff and disappear’.
A wonderful screaming guitar break from Troy and powerful drumming from Violet brings this tune to a close in a triumphant manner celebrating her release from emotional turmoil and the resultant change in her life.
Quite an incredible vocal performance from Violet. This track merely a taster of things to come from a creative and talented young mind. On the evidence of this beautiful piece of song writing Violet Redfern’s mind is most certainly not ‘In A Mess.’
