Review by Lydia Evans for MPM

Alt-metal band From Ashes To New will release the digital deluxe version of their latest album, Blackout, on 7th June via Better Noise Music. The deluxe album consists of the original 12 tracks plus six bonus tracks.

BLACKOUT (DELUXE) across digital platforms now at https://fatn.ffm.to/blackoutdeluxe.

Blackout was released in July of last year; it is a critically acclaimed and #1-charting album. Amongst the new tracks includes Barely Breathing (featuring Chrissy Costanza from Against the Current) – since its release in February, it has gained over 8 million streams and views.

Vocalist Danny Case speaks of Blackout deluxe – “With these new tracks and collaborations, our biggest record yet just went to the next level.

We’re thrilled to bring our fans a couple new, exciting songs as well as some mind-blowing features from a handful of artists that we love.” Starting with the original tracks: Heartache is a dynamic track with rap-style vocals, forceful drums, and an electronic sound.

It’s a solid start to the album. Nightmare has strong, screaming-style vocals. The mix of both Danny Case and Matt Brandyberry’s vocal talents makes for excitement.

Hate Me Too has a catchy riff and radio playability with its chanting chorus. This track landed in the Top 10 Active Rock Radio charts as well as being listed as one of Loudwire’s Most Played Songs On Rock Radio 2023.

Hope You’re Happy and Barely Breathing are two tracks with the most nu-metal, early 2000s feel to them. The rap verses explode into heavy choruses with dynamic instrumentals.

Dead To Me is a great track to listen to with headphones as it’s so layered. Monster In Me particularly showcases the guitars and bass.

They’re heavy and powerful which juxtaposes the rap verse with more EDM sounds. Echoes is another heavy song with aggressive drums and instrumentals.

Armageddon shows off moments of quiet and calmness mixed into the extreme, metalcore tracks. From Ashes To New seems to have an affinity for the dynamics and mixing in these moments of calmer vocals or instrumentals for seconds before slamming back into the music.

My personal favourite is Legacy. It’s fast paced and exciting with impressive drums and a brutal chord progression. Until We Break features Matty Mullins of Memphis Mayfire.

It’s a good collaboration and his vocals mix well with the music. The last song of the original tracks is
Broken By Design, another electrifying track.

The bonus tracks include new songs such as One Foot In The Grave and Live Before I’m Dead as well as remixes and collaborations of songs from the original release of Blackout.

Barely Breathing (featuring Against The Current) is first. This version of the song featuring Chrissy Costanza is cool; when her voice comes in it only adds another layer to the song and makes it better. The combination of voices works yet again.

One Foot In The Grave (featuring Aaron Pauley of Mice & Men) is an interesting track with many layers. I like how the deluxe version features different vocalists of other bands as I feel that the combination of different voices work well for the metalcore genre. Live Before I’m Dead (Hours) has a more low-key introduction before the beat drops, extending into a heavy chorus with a rocking bassline and guitars.

Monster In Me (featuring Yelawolf) features American singer and rapper Yelawolf, whose verse is commanding and severe. Though the original track is solid, this remix adds something fresh and makes it better. Nightmare (Sullivan King remix) has a very club, electric sound thanks to DJ Sullivan King.

It’s a huge sound especially through headphones, and if you’re a fan of electronic or dubstep music, this mix is for you.

The last track is Hate Me Too (acoustic). The track still is high-powered even acoustically, but we’re able to focus on the vocals more. It shows another side of the music that From Ashes To New can accomplish.

The bonus tracks bring something new to the album and are worth checking out.

From Ashes To New spent 2023 on the road with their headlining US tour as well as touring with Shinedown, Three Days Grace, In This Moment, Motionless in White and Fit For A King.

They return in 2024 for another US tour, beginning 30th April in Albany, New York. They will also be playing at a few festivals in the summer and fall, including Rock Fest and Louder Than Life
