The most definitive book yet includes intimate interviews with Robby Krieger and John Densmore, and meticulously sourced archival text from Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek.

Contributors include Krist Novoselic, Slash, Nile Rodgers, Jim Kerr, Nancy Sinatra, Gustavo Dudamel and Van Morrison.

‘We were reflecting on our own career as it was happening. It’s not that we were trend- conscious, we were doing exactly what we would have been doing anyway, but it came at the right time.’ – Jim Morrison

Created in celebration of the band’s upcoming 60th anniversary, Night Divides the Day opens up The Doors’ archives like never before. Sourced from hundreds of hours of archival interviews and interwoven with brand-new commentary, together Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, John Densmore, and Robby Krieger tell the story of The Doors in a manuscript of nearly 50,000 words. Joining them are a host of contributors, plus a foreword by Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, and an afterword by Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel.

Presented in a limited edition of only 2,000 numbered boxed sets, all signed by John Densmore and Robby Krieger, each edition includes the 344-page signed book, a 7” vinyl record with rare demos of “Hello, I Love You” and “Moonlight Drive,” and assorted historical memorabilia.

The Archive

With unlimited access granted by the band, Night Divides the Day includes a unique collection of historical ephemera – including childhood photos, song lyrics, poster artwork, movie stills, and much more – which adds context to the wealth of rare photography that documents the band’s musical odyssey.

Night Divides the Day unveils previously unseen album cover outtakes and shots of the band in the recording studio at work on legendary albums such as Waiting for the Sun and The Soft Parade. Shots from famed photographers such as George Rodriguez, Guy Webster, and Henry Diltz, as well as friends Paul Ferrara and Frank Lisciandro, take the reader behind the scenes and on the road with The Doors.

Invaluable items from the band’s history, including vintage guitars, microphones, keyboards, amps, and more, have been sourced from across America and specially photographed. They are brought together for the first time in Night Divides the Day. All of this is accompanied by photography from the members’ own archives, totaling many hundreds of images, presenting a never-before-seen kaleidoscopic portrait of The Doors.

The Contributors

Contributing to the band’s narrative are those who were part of their journey. They include Van Morrison, who while in Them was supported by The Doors during their early days at the Whisky a Go Go; Elektra president Jac Holzman; friend and filmmaker Frank Lisciandro; photographers Henry Diltz, Paul Ferrara and Kate Simon, who met with Jim in Paris in the months before his passing; the Turtles’ Mark Volman; the Whisky’s booker Ronnie Haran; and famous fans of The Doors such as Slash, Nile Rodgers, Jim Kerr, Nancy Sinatra, and many more.

‘We were just a bunch of psychedelic guys trying to spread the word and the feel of what it was like to be high in Venice back in the mid-sixties. And boy, was it a good feeling to watch that sun set into the middle of the ocean and feel that peace, and to feel at one with the universe.’

– Ray Manzarek

The Band’s Legacy

In Night Divides the Day, the band traces their development from their beginnings in Los Angeles, playing local clubs on the Sunset Strip, to pivotal moments in their career, including

the infamous performance at the Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami, as well as the releases of their biggest songs such as, “Light My Fire,” “The End” and “Riders on the Storm.”

Night Divides the Day also touches on the story of The Doors after the death of Jim Morrison, including the albums Other Voices, Full Circle, and the acclaimed, Grammy-nominated An American Prayer. This was accompanied by the band’s epic, “The End,” soundtracking Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. By 1980, John, Robby, and Ray had introduced a whole new generation to their music. Featuring a foreword by Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, and an afterword by Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo

Dudamel, Night Divides the Day examines the far-reaching influence and importance of The Doors today.

‘We didn’t sit down and have a meeting to say, ‘Hey, we want to change the minds of people.’ We didn’t say it but we enjoyed doing it. We could see it happen, we could feel it in concerts, that sociologically, besides musically, it was affecting people. And what a high that is.’

– John Densmore
