Among today’s most influential musicians is James Osterberg aka Iggy Pop, widely regarded as a pioneer of punk rock through his solo work and releases as the vocalist and lyricist of the band The Stooges. While he is most commonly dubbed the ‘godfather of punk,’ Iggy dabbled in a diverse range of genres throughout his music career, including hard rock, heavy metal, jazz, and blues.

In fact, his versatility as a musician will be showcased in his upcoming live album, Live At Montreux Jazz Festival 2023. The album, which will be officially released on January 24th, 2025, features classics like the garage rock ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’ from the Stooges’ self-titled debut album and solo tracks, such as the chart-topper single ‘The Passenger.’

Beyond music, Iggy’s influence extends to fashion, as the punk pioneer goes against the grain even in his sartorial choices, like wearing a maternity dress with golf shoes on stage and appearing in the April 1974 edition of Creem magazine with a silk bow tie and colourful patchwork jeans. The British knitwear brand HADES also collaborated with Iggy for a line of signature jumpers, cropped knits, and scarves decorated with the singer’s popular album and song titles, such as ‘The Idiot’ and ‘Lust for Life.’

But more than just his unique taste in clothes, Iggy is also a walking source of inspiration on how to style accessories, particularly sunglasses—to which he even dedicated his 1996 song ‘Shades’. With sunglasses being a staple for punk rock and metal musicians, here are ways to style this equally fashionable and practical eyewear a la Iggy.

Rock out with bold and oversized shades

Like every legendary rock and metal artist, Iggy Pop is often seen rocking bold and oversized sunglasses for music videos, photoshoots, and live performances—a testament to his loud and captivating persona.

In the official music video for ‘Beside You,’ the tenth track on his 1993 album ‘American Caesar,’ Iggy can be seen wearing oversized circular shades, which appear to be smashed to represent a lover’s brokenness and longing for his beloved. While the exact brand of sunglasses isn’t identified, you can find similar statement-making styles from designer brands like Moncler, with its ME8005 Futuro showcasing the same funky flair as Iggy’s pair.

Opt for minimalist frames for formal events

Despite his distinct fashion inspired by the early ’70s, Iggy isn’t afraid to pare down his usual eccentricity when it comes to formal events and red carpets, like the 2022 Polar Music Prize award ceremony. He typically shows up in a well-tailored suit, yet unashamedly his rockstar self by wearing a pair of sunglasses, though in more minimalist frame styles like aviators and keyholes.

On the leading retailer Sunglass Hut, you can find a curated collection of men’s sunglasses that include classic styles best suited for fancy dinners and events, such as the Original Wayfarer Classic from Ray-Ban and Prada’s rectangular PR06Ys in neutral colours. The website also lets you take a style quiz to tailor recommendations for your facial features and fashion needs.

Lastly, like his era-defining, boundary-defying music, Iggy Pop reminds you to embrace your uniquely personal style through embellished frames. While he has been photographed wearing colourful and patterned frames alongside other music icons like David Bowie and Debbie Harry, Iggy Pop’s eyewear campaign with Cutler and Gross sees the punk rock musician wearing sunglasses that incorporate a 925 sterling silver emblem, courtesy of the collaboration with the jeweller The Great Frog. Aside from the silver detailing, unisex styles also feature a streamlined chain and are available in colourways like tortoiseshell, deep red, and clear acetate—allowing you to find the frames that best express your personality.
