Review by Ritchie Birnie for MPM

Rock Monsters Daughtry pull together both Shock to the System EPs and throw in some live renditions for a package that is not to be missed.

It is a long way from the fifth season of American Idol back in 2005 for Chris Daughtry. It is safe to say he never looked back and he has bucked the trend of failed talent show contestants which is even more impressive as the Rock world most definitely looks down its nose at these instant stardom programmes.

There is only one way to impress us…sheer talent and boy has this man shone in that respect. With a raft of Number ones, platinum records and a whole house full of awards he has most definitely proved himself and this deluxe release just adds fuel to the fire.

If you are a fan you will have heard all of these tracks (bar the live recordings) but if you have not, why not? Daughtry are massive for a reason and every track in this collection shows exactly why.

You have straight for your throat beasts like “The Reckoning” which hits like an industrial mammoth, “Artificial” which hits like Early Linkin Park and “Pieces” which kicks like an off kilter  masterpiece.

It is not all 100mph and slower numbers like the beautiful “Nervous” and “Antidote” break the furious pace with angelic moments and heartfelt pleas.

You are never far away from utter beasts of tracks like the brutal “Terrified” and the stunning “The Day I Die” but all the die hard fans will be here for the unreleased live tracks.

These live tracks catch the raw side of Daughtry and for me live is always the testing ground for a band but the instant you hear the incredible vocals of Chris on first track “The Dam” you will be  blown away. This is a real goosebumps moment.

The lighters will still be out as we jump straight into the atmospheric version of “Antidote” and those shivers down the spine continue. We get a full blast rendition of “The Day I Die” before we ease out on final track “Artificial”. The live tracks are worth the purchase price of this release all on their own.

You do not need me to tell you that Daughtry are one of the biggest Rock acts on the go right now but I will and with this collection of songs they add to not only to their catalogue but to their accomplishments.

The band are as big as they have ever been and with albums like Shock to the System you can see why their appeal is so large. Daughtry encompass the tag Rock Stars and this release is packed full of hits that should not be missed.
