Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM
Proving that Scandinavia and America don’t have the monopoly on glacial Gothic rock, Perth resident The Effigy shows that whilst Australia might be the land of sunshine, there’s a darkness that dwells at the deepest part of their soul.
An exercise in catharsis, ‘Dying Star’ brings a cinematic yet deeply personal cinematic sweep to this tale of love gone bad, the diary of a scarred survivor crawling from the wreckage.
Whilst the lyrics may be pitch black, there’s an Evanescence style heft and glory to both the vocals
and music, the edge that speaks of death by a thousand cuts illuminated by the brightest of lights and turning it into something Life-giving.
Worthy of your attention. The Effigy have captured lightning in a bottle, their gloriously dark adventures a thing of breathless beauty that makes it impossible to resist.
