Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM

This is a rush. Blasting out authentic and smile-inducing chicken-scratch Americana, duo Anthony Olympia and Brent Rupard, a.k.a.

Everette positively glow with a wild bonhomie and some dazzling playing. The Kentucky natives have stripped things back on this release, the song breathing and taking on a life of its own as it picks up speed like a freight train whose brakes have failed.

It’s certainly a fun ride and the blend of the quicksilver fretwork and Olympia and Rupard’s vocals harmonising gives it an irresistible drive that’s soaked in bourbon high atmosphere.

As a taster from their forthcoming ‘Keys to Kentucky’ EP, ‘High and Lonesome’ brings together the great storytelling and fluid musicianship that these two road dogs have made their name on. For those slogging through the cold, wet Winter into Spring months, this is a dose of pure sunshine.
